Holy Heart of Himachal Duration
: .....
These quoted lines were taken from Skanda Purana, a vedic
text, were written with the entire Himalaya in mind. But the words are apt
in either case. Complicated lives can be alerted by the experience of Himachal
and its touch can restore sanity. Himachal Pradesh is located in North West in
India in the lap of the Great Himalayas. It is bordered by Jammu and Kashmir in
the North, Punjab in the West, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh in the South and
Tibet in the East. Low rolling bills, just a couple of hundred meters above sea
level, climb on to touch the core of the Himalaya mountains. Here lie peaks that
are several thousand meters high and never lose their perennial snows. This
beautiful state is divided into two parts Southern and Northern Himachal.
Trek I.
Spiti: Drive-Cum-Trek
Day to
Day
Itinerary
The children of Spiti in north-west Himachal
get their first toys to play with from nature. These are fossil
mollusks and ammonites, precursors to the marine life in our oceans.
Embedded in the bed of the Spiti river is evidence of the Tethys sea that
existed at the place where the Himalayan stands today. Spiti is far away
from everywhere. Because of its proximity to Tibet, it existed behind
the forbidden 'inner-line'. Now entry permits are available from Delhi,
Shimla, and Kullu. The approach to Spiti, however, is restricted
because of its isolation. Spiti lies between Ladakh, Tibet, Lahaul,
Kullu, and Kinnaur. After Independence it became a part of Punjab and
later, a district of Himachal Pradesh.

Trek II.
Manikaran-Pin Parvati Pass - Pin Valley
Day to
Day
Itinerary
In the sylvan surroundings of the Manikaran
region it is believed that Lord Shiva, angry at a domestic squabble, went
off into the fields and there under the cool shade of a tall cannabis plant,
he suddenly experienced comfort and bliss. He ate some of its leaves
and impressed, endorsed the plant. He came to be regarded as the Lord
of Bhanng (marijuana). Manikaran, famous for its medicinal hot springs, is a
temple town built around a Gurudwara and a Hindu shrine. First, reach
Bhunter on the Kullu road by air or by road.

Trek III.
Beas Kund-Bhrigu
Lake
Day to
Day
Itinerary
In the vedic period, the upper catchment area
of Beas river in the Kullu valley was called Kulanthapith (End of the
Habitable world) in Sanskrit. Stands at the top of the Rohtang Pass at the
head of the valley, showered upon by monsoon clouds every year and irrigated
by countless streams. In front of you is the rain-shadow area of
Lahaul, desolate and stark. Not surprising then that the Indo-Aryans
who settled in this valley didn't think much of the land beyond Rohtang.
But for a trekker, some trails around this region are a must, the Beas
Kund-Bhrigu lake trek being just one of them.

Trek IV.
To Bara Bangal
Day to
Day
Itinerary
There was a time when, in Himachal Pradesh,
information was taken by traders today prefer the truck and the road, you
can still hear the shrill piercing whistle of the Gaddi shepherd herding his
flock.
