Trekking in Spiti Valley

Spiti is the most isolated sub district of Himachal Pradesh. The mountains are devoid of vegetation; erosion by wind, sun and snow over millions of years has laid bare the rocks.  The rugged rocky mountain slopes sweep down to riverbeds giving the landscape a peculiar moonlike appearance. Trekking in Spiti Recently opened to foreigners, the trails in Spiti Valley provide a very different experience. The trails are tough and pass through very rugged and isolated regions.

|Trek -I|  Lingti Valley Trek

Lingti Valley is a living geological museum and is the longest (60km) and largest side valley of Spiti.  It is famous for shales and fossils in a geological history dating back 250 million years.

|Trek -II|  Pin Valley Trek

Pin valley is entered from the Spiti over a steel bridge near Atargo, 14km SE of Kaja, and is even more rugged, barren and devoid of vegetation than the norm for this region.  Sheer, vividly-colored stratified cliffs tower above the dirt track with a bus service along the Pin river for 13km to Guling (3554m). 

|Trek -III|  Pin Parbati Pass (4802m)

Ascent on the Kullu (W) side is described in the Kullu section in which brief historical notes are also given.  Destination permit may still be needed.

|Trek -IV|  Satluj Valley over Tarikhango Pass (4866m) 45km

Adopted as an exit route from the Spiti region, fairly long and arduous but not difficult, joining the Shimla road near Wangtu at the Kinnaur district boundary.  Easier and shorter than the more scenic Shakarof Pass (5022m) further W.  As for the Pin-Parbati Pass route to Ghurguru.
