Trekking in Lahaul Valley
Lahaul is part of Lahaul & Spiti
district. In fact both Lahaul and Spiti are two distinct geographical
regions separated by high rising Kunzum pass. Not only this, these two
regions are entirely different units socially and culturally also. Lahaul
offers a few very rewarding high altitude trekking trails along the
Chandra and Bhaga rivers and over high passes full of ice and snow.
Trek -I
Menthosa
Base Camp (hard)
A fairly strenuous trek of 5-6 days though the
Miyar Valley above Udaipur. Reach the latter township by bus from Manali over
Rohtang Pass in about 12h. Stay at the PWD rest house situated 1 km E of the
town centre, near the confluence of the Miyar Nala with the confluence of
Udaipur has a reasonably big market and basic provisions are available. Nearby
is the beautifully carved wooden temple of Murkula Devi (see above). Best
Period : 15 August to 5 October.
Trek -II
Darcha-Baralacha Pass (4891m)- Chandra Tal
The Baralacha crosses the Great Himalayan Range
from the Lahaul Valley into Zanskar. The trail circles round a great
congregation of Lahaul peaks identified in groups by the letters KR (Koa Rang),
M (Mulkila) and CB (Chandra Bhaga). Spectacular views of these summits and
their glaciers are so afforrded. The trek is strenuous and the best period is
between July and end-September. Reach Darcha (3300m) by the regular bus service
from Manali (10-12h). The camp ground lies in the broad bed of the Barai Nala.
A portion of the journey, from Darcha to Baralacha Pass, lies along the
Manali-Leh highway. But there is hardly any traffic to disturb walkers; and
take shortcuts. Arrangements for hiring mules or porters should preferably be
made in Manali.
Trek -III
Darcha-Baralacha Pass-Phirtse La
(5435m)-Shingo La (5097m)
An adventurous multi-pass circular excursion,
bordering on being an expedition and taking 8-9 days. From Darcha, as for the
previous trek; go over Baralacha Pass (4891m), E then N, descending the road to
Yunam Lake. Follow down the W side of the Yunam river to Kilang Sarai camp
ground (4609m), a pleasant spot on grassy meadows. Shortly, the motor road
crosses the river; remain on the true left bank. Follow a good track for 4h
parallel to the river, passing Narbutiphung campsite (4460m)..
