Trekking About
Ladakh
Leh Ladakh India is
one of few wonderful destinations ideal for trekking and
mountaineering. Ladakh with its rough terrain and wonderful scenic
locales offer an adventure lover a mix of both scenic beauty and
challenging heights. The Suru and Zanskar valley has a number of
stunning peaks that challenge an intrepid traveler to scale new
heights in Ladakh. Some of the ideal places for mountaineering include
Nun-Kun massif and Zanskar massif.
Monasteries in Ladakh
In Ladakh these have
always been the centre of religious, social, economic and even
political functions. They are a living institution, especially
because of their ecological position in a country where the barren
mountainous character of the landscape forces the economy to function
on a collective basis. Most of the gompas lie on majr ancient trading
routes extending from Tibet to Ladakh, among them Hemis, Thiksey,
Alchi, Lamayuru, Ringdom, Karsha, etc. Almost all the gompas follow a
code of architecture.
Ever thought of
trekking on a frozen river? A part of the Zanskar River freezes during
the winter and is used as trekking route by many seasoned trekking
enthusiasts. The trek is one of its kinds in Leh Ladakh. If you are a
novice when it comes to climbing mountains and negotiating treacherous
treks, it is better to hire a seasoned mountaineer or trekker. A guide
with experience and with fairly good knowledge of the area is of great
help. The Leh-Ladakh treks are:-

Shang La-Matho La-Stok Kangri
In the cold desert of
Ladakh each village stands out like an oasis. The availability of
water determines the village's size The cropping season is restricted
to one-third of the year because of the lengthy winter. Over the
ages, barley has become the fulcrum around which Ladakhi life
revolves. Its flour forms the staple diet and it is fermented to make
chaang. Animal husbandry supplements agriculture to complete the
structure of the traditional economy. Animals provide transport,
labour, wool, milk, and dung, the main fuel....

Padum to Martselang
The Landscapes of
Ladakh has been compared to the bleak surface of the moon. Images of
the barren lunar vistas are similar to those obtained of this
trans-Himalayan region. But its ecosystem is remarkably Vital. The
trail takes you through a stretc remote even by lofty Ladakhi
standards. Because of his isolation, it is an excellent place for
viewing wildlife. With not less than sixty river crossing, the trek
also provides moments of great adventure....

Padum-Lamayuru
North
of the Great Himalayan range, amongst a tangled knot of jagged
mountains, lies a rugged and fascinating land, the once independent
kingdom of Zanskar.
Sandwiched between the
Indus Valley and the main crest of the Indian Himalaya, this remote
and inaccessible setting, well guarded by snowy mountain passes, has
kept alive an archaic form of Tibetan Buddhism which flourishes in
chain of far-flung monasteries, most of which occupy spectacular
fortified locations, high on rocky ridges in isolated valleys.
Lovely
high meadow camp sites and dry desert land, high passes and
snow-capped peaks stunning scenery, Buddhist monasteries and
picturesque villages with their irrigated fields....
