Trekking in Darjeeling, West
Bengal
The trekking season in Darjeeling
generally begins at the end of March and closes about the middle of June.
The second season begins mid-September and goes right into the last week
of November. The trails pass through varied temperature zones; between a
valley botom at 300m and over the top of a ridge above 3800m you need
clothing for both extremes. Whatever the month, a raincoat is an
essential item. Leaches are a nuisance and are found in abundance on the
routes out of Darjeeling. A pinch of salt will prove quite handy to get
rid of them. Darjeeling to Phalut is the most popular route. One can
proceed towards Phalut via Sandakphu and come back via Rimbik, or
vice-versa. An interesting extension of this trek over the singalila Pass
(3690m) leads to Pemayangtse in Sikkim.

Sandakphu Trek Darjeeling
Trekking into Sandakphu in Darjeeling starts off from an altitude of 1,524
meters (5,000 ft) and gradually climbs up through forests of
rhododendron, giant magnolias, natural beauty of this trek, spruce and other trees of sub-alpine
region and more than 600 varieties of
orchids-the largest to be found in one geographical area in the
world. For flora worshippers, the months of April and May are the
best time of the year for the trek while for those who have an
insatiable thirst for a view of the mountains, the best months are in
autumn.
The view from this beautiful place is unsurpassed by any view anywhere.
Where else can be seen 180 degrees of snow-capped mountains which includes Everest, Makalu, Lhotse,
Kumbhakarna, Kanchenjunga, Chomolhari in one single stretch of
snows-an ethereal beauty. It is easy to understand why people
leave hearth and home, traveling sometimes thousands of miles
to walk through ripples of terraced fields of maize, rice, millet and
barley, leaving the last traces of civilization far behind.
BEST SEASON:
The
most rewarding season for travelling through Darjeeling and Sikkim is between
May to October. The winters are very cold and the region is swamped by fog. The
rainy season make trekking unsafe. Plan your trip well in advance and enquire
about the weather conditions before setting out.
The
monsoon in the Teesta valley is heavy, lasting from early June till mid
September for Sikkim and Darjeeling. For this reason, winter treks are
recommended, beginning with October though the period from April to end May is
also preferred.
