Valley in Himachal Pradesh
|Trekking in Chamba - Chamba Marwa Pass|
Infrequently crossed and comparatively low,
this pass is quite strenuous over 6-7 days; mainly done by local people at
present. Also knwn as chandra Jot. Best period: 10-30 June, and 15 August to
10 October.
DAY-1
Trela road is reached by bus
(40Km) in 3h. There is also a direct bus from Patankot railhead. A few eating
shops and PWD rest house; fresh milk is available and porters can be hired
here. From the village follow a metalled road N for one Km, then go off E on a
footpath ascending gradually along the Chanju Nala. After one Km the path
crosses the stream and ascends steeply for 1.5Km to Tikri; post office and a
forest rest-house. The path then runs down to Naredh, crosses a stream and
following the N bank of Chanju Nala reaches Bagai. Good camp ground outside the
village where firewood and water are available.
DAY-2
Bagai-Mawa-Nakai (2255m) 12 Km
- It is advisable to hire fresh porters in Bagai who are well acquainted with
the area. The trail leaves the Chanju Nala and follows the Kamli Nala coming
from the NE. [Another trail branches off from bagai towards the SW along Chanju
Nala and after crossing Drati Pass (4694m) reaches Tindi in Lahaul Valley] From
Bagai to Mawa is a steep climb of 14-15 houses and a small school; good camp
ground, and firewood is available. Fresh milk from the Gujar herdsmen who have
settlements hereabouts.
DAY-3
Nakai-Panglodi (2745m) 10Km
Steeply through dense forest for 4-5h, then down, accross a small stream and a
reascent to Panglodi camp ground; stream and rock shelter for 5 persons. A
Gujar family stays close by; firewood is available.
DAY-4
Panglodi-Alwas (3355m) 7Km A
steep path goes up along a cliff and 5h are needed to reach Alwas. No room in
this narrow place to pitch tents but a rock shelter here is big enough for 10
people.
DAY-5
Alyas-Marwa Pass-Alwas (3460m)
10Km Crossing the pass from one upper site to the other is a long tiring haul of
10-11h. Steep sections on snow should be safeguarded with an ice axe or ski
stick. The pass is reached in 6-7h; panoramic view of Baihali Jot group and
dzones of high peaks on the Great Himalayan Range.
Descending the first 30m from the top is tricky
and precarious; then a strech in loose boulders followed by a long section of
ice and snow which becomes soft as the sun rises. After 3-4h descent alwas (or
Seri Got) is reached, a pleasant camp ground with a small rock shelter.
DAY-6
Alwas-Tindi (2800m) 20 Km
Onwards, a continuous descent towards the Chandra-Bhaga Valley. The trail meets
the newly constructed road in 2h. Follow this SE along the river to Tindi, a
big village with a PWD rest house. Bus to Manali over the Rohtang Pass.
