Sikkim Travel
Sikkim is a small
region wedged in between the eastern border of Nepal and Bhutan. Until India
annexed it in 1975 it was an independent kingdom. This move was undoubtedly
motivated by India's fear of the growing Chinese influence in the Himalayas.
Sikkim is culturally linked to its neighbors Nepal and Bhutan, and Tibet to the
north. Because of its remoteness it does have a specific flavor of its own.

About Gangtok (Capital of Sikkim)
The Capital
and principal town of Sikkim is a growing resort full of taxis, tourists and
hotels. Spread on a ridge at 1870m, it has four to five roads running almost
parallel to each other. It used to be a typical beautiful Himalayan town a few
years ago. Now it is being spoiled by traders and builders.

Trekking in Darjeeling
The trekking
season in Darjeeling generally begins at the end of March and closes about the
middle of June. The second season begins mid-September and goes right into the
last week of November. The trails pass through varied temperature zones;
between a valley botom at 300m and over the top of a ridge above 3800m you need
clothing for both extremes. Whatever the month, a raincoat is an essential
item. Leaches are a nuisance and are found in abundance on the routes out of
Darjeeling.
