Pin Valley
Trek Kullu
Pin valley is entered from the Spiti
over a steel bridge near Atargo, 14km SE of Kaja, and is even more
rugged, barren and devoid of vegetation than the norm for this
region. Sheer, vividly-colored stratified cliffs tower above the dirt
track with a bus service along the Pin river for 13km to Guling
(3554m). After this the valley trail remains good, through Pokchung
and over a wire bridge at the enterance to the important tributary
Parahio Valley, then to the large village of Sangam. It is said to be
founded by Padmasambhava because a large number of the Nyingmapa
scriptures are connected with him. The main doctrines of this sect are
sub–divided into nine vehicles. These nine are further divided into
two groups: -
Casual Vehicles and Resultant Vehicles. The
former is stages of practice for collecting insight and intelligence. The latter
is stages of practice during which one has the full authority to visualize
oneself, as the enlightened one even before its attainment. This tradition is
also known as the Terma, or ‘Treasure Text Tradition’. Up in the valleys core
area marvel at the sight of the glacier lilies and other flowers that bloom
alongside the melting waters. The Snow Leopard turns vegetarian, eating rare
shrubs like Salix and Myricaria, particularly during winter, when the prey
species are difficult to prowl on.
Pin valley promises lingering pictures of starkness and rugged beauty of the
Himalayan cold desert. Of nature's secrets that can never be unlocked but can be
seen and felt.
Pin Valley National
Park
The Pin Valley National Park is situated in the high cold desert of Spiti Valley
– a visit to this park is recommended for only those who are physically a
perfect ten. It is just beside the Great Himalayan National Park and Rupi Bhaba
Sanctuary. The Bara Shigri Glacier forms its north boundary. The park covers
675sqkm with a buffer zone of 1,150sqkm to its east where there are villages.
The altitude varies from 3,600m to 6,630m. The scenery is rugged until the
summer brings in some colour. It is the habitat of big herds of Siberian ibex,
bharal, red fox, pika, weasels, lamergeier, Himalayan griffon, golden eagle,
Chakor partridge, Himalayan snow cock, a variety of rose finches and the
ever–elusive snow leopard.
