Uttaranchal Himalaya
Mountaineering
Expeditions Garhwal & Kumaon Region, Uttaranchal
The Garhwal and Kumon region in the state of
Uttaranchal not only constitutes a large part of the Himalayas, but also
contains some of the most challenging peaks - Nanda Devi, Trisul, Dunagiri,
Kamet, Chaukhamba, Nilkanth, Bandarpoonch, etc.
Nanda Devi, whose name means
Blessed Goddess, is the highest mountain in India. It is a great white
double pyramid overlooking the sacred Garhwal region. Nanda Devi rises from a
vast ring of high mountains that form the Nanda Devi Sanctuary, an amphitheater
seventy miles in circumference and 6000m high, surrounding the Rishiganga
valley. Only once in this giant cirque does the elevation drop below 5200 m.
Trisul is one of the more majestic
mountains of the Garhwal region of the Himalayas. India's highest mountain,
Nanda Devi (25,645 ft.), is northeast of Trisul, connected by a long narrow
crest. Trisul was the first of the Garhwal mountains to be climbed, an ascent
which even more importantly marked the world's first ascent of a 7,000 meter
peak. In 1976, Trisul became the first 7,000 meter peak to be descended from
summit to snowline on skiis. Today it remains the most frequently climbed of
India's 7,000 meter peaks.
From the Chaukhamba
Viewpoint, one can get lost in the mystery of the endless mountainscape. The
scene is hypnotic that one may not get tired of gazing at the timeless peaks for
hours together. On the left of Chaukhamba Viewpoint, lies the dense oak and
rhododendron forest of Dwarikhal, passing through which is a breezy experience
and enabling one to play hide and seek with the beaming Sun. Oaks and
rhododendrons flash past as one approaches a natural water source just at the
bottom of the forest. The water is more refreshing than the best soft drink
available in the cities. On this way, one comes across a place called Ghurdauri,
a sort of race-course in old times. Now, an engineering college has come up
here. From here, one can gaze endlessly at the Himalayan ranges in rows and the
Alaknanda flowing in perpetual peace.
Treks of Kumaon
Most of the trails in
Kumaon are relatively easy, with gradual ascents and descents over
rolling hills and through meadows (Bugials or Kharag). These trails
offer breathtaking views of the high peaks such as Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot,
Trisuli and Hardeol. Eastern Kumaon has recently been opened to foreign
trekkers and the trails are dominated by the Panchchuli group of peaks.

destinations for wildlife
tourism. These are the Rajaji National Park, Govind Pashu Vihar,

walking uphill and sometimes steeply downhill, 6-7 hours daily with
10kgs on your back. The period of the trek can vary from 1 day to 30
days, depending on the masochistic tendencies of the people involved.
