All
the treks of Kullu (Himachal Pradesh India) is connected by 'our
coach' with Delhi, Chandigarh, Jammu and Srinagar.
DAY-1- Udaipur (2652m) - Charat (2855m)
16 km - A jeepable track runs along the W bank of the Miyar for 7km, then
becomes too rough for vehicles after crossing a bridge to the East side which
continues as a pedestrian trail up the broader valley. At Chamrat the camp site
is reached 5oom before the village, on left side of the path.
DAY-2- Chamrat-Urgus (3293m) 13 km -
Follow the good path through the wide pleasant valley, ascending gently beside
fields where the local people plough with the help of Churu, a hybrid of cow and
yak. Karpat (3072m), at the junction of Phabang (Karpat) Nala and Miyar, is
reached after 8km; Phabrang Peak (6172m) towers to the SE (the base of this
mountain can be reached from here in a day or two). A little higher the trail
crosses the Miyar Nala to the NW side and passing through the small villages of
Churpat and Changut arrives at Urgus, a typical Lahauli village with a small
gompa. Small room for overnight in the gompa complex.
DAY-3- Urgus-Menthosa Base (4250m) 12km -
Engage fresh porters; those from Udaipur may not be familiar with the ground
ahead. Go NW up the left side of Urgus Nala at a steep angle for 8h to a
traditional camp ground below a moraine hill of the Menthosa Glacier.
DAY-4- Menthosa Base-Menthosa Glacier
(4610m) 5km - Ascend round left side of moraine hill, then bear right
and climb gradually to the glacier in 3-4h. With time and energy,
follow the leteral moraine on the far right to Urgus Pass (4957m),
also called Oplpha La and Twani by local people. Descent by the same
route to Udaipur can be done in 2 days.
Urgus Pass-Sach Khas - By crossing the pass, a
long descent NW/W first down a glacier and moraine, then by an improving path
down the Harriun Nala, reaches the Sainchu Nala at Harriun hamlet. A good trail
W along the N side of the Sainchu Nala arrives at the Chandra-Bhaga river
opposite Sach Khas (2256m); PWD rest house, etc. From here continue S to Purthi
bus roadhead (2250m); the old trail for walking is on the W and S
side
of the river; the new road is on the East and North side.
