About Ladakh
Leh, the capital of Ladakh is a fascinating
destination. Age-old monasteries, quaint lanes, colorful markets and stunning
views of the Himalayas make Leh an exotic destination. Leh is where your
adventure in Ladakh begins. You can go trekking through the mountainous terrain
of Ladakh, enjoy a game of polo in a high altitude arena or watch an archery
contest where local residents compete in a contest that remains unchanged by
time. Mountaineering, white water rafting and wildlife tours are other
adventurous attractions of Leh Ladakh India. Though the weather can be freezing
cold, the smiles on the faces of the Ladakhi people are sure to warm your heart.
Feel on top of the world in Ladakh, on tours to Ladakh with Leh Ladakh India.
Leh (3505)
A tiny speck of freshness in a hollow between monotonous grey slopes at
a transiion from desert to greenery. Leh is a jigsaw of terraced roofs and
houses jammed against one another. The bazaar cuts the town in two; this
main artery reaches out from the centre to the enormous Royal Palace.
Built into rock, the palace dominates the whole countryside. The mosque
used by the Muslim community lies at the far end of the bazaar. In the
narrow lanes are small eating places; here the standard meal is a bowl of boiled
noodles, toped with meat both, washed down with salted butter tea. The little bazaar (Markets) sells hand-woven
carpets with dragon designs, trinkets of silver and copper set with turquoise
and painted thankas or scrolls.
Monasteries &
Gompas in Ladakh
In Ladakh these have always been the centre of
religious, social, econmic and even political functions. They are a living
institution, especially because of their ecological position in a country where
the barren mountainous character of the landscape forces the economy to function
on a collective basis. Most of the gompas lie on major ancient trading
routes extending from Tibet to Ladakh, among them Hemis, Thiksey, Alchi,
Lamayuru, Ringdum, Karsha, etc. Almost all the gompas follow a code of
architecture. The interior is divided into several halls, of which Du-Khang, the
main prayer hall, is more spacious. A gompa also has dwelling cells, library and
a large courtyard where dances and other ceremonies are performed.
Travel
Information Ladakh
The main overland approach to Ladakh is from the
Kashmir Valley via the 434 km Drinagar-Leh road which remains open for traffic
from early June to November. The most dramatic part of this road journey is the
ascent up the 11,500 feet/3,505 m high Zoji-la, the pass in the Great Himalayan
Wall that serves as the gateway to Ladakh. The J&K State Road Transport
Corporation (J&K SRTC) operates regular Deluxe and Ordinary bus services between
Srinagar and Leh on this route with an overnight halt at Kargil. Taxis (cars and
jeeps ) are also available at Srinagar for the journey. Groups can charter
Deluxe and A-class buses for Leh, Kargil or Padum (Zanskar) for the J&K SRTC at
Srinagar.
A number of high passes fall en route among which
the highest one, known as Taglang-la, is the world's second highest motorable
pass at an altitude of 17,469 feet/ 5,325m. H.P. Tourism, H.P. STRC and J&K SRTC
operate Deluxe and Ordinary bus services between Manali and Leh and we also
arrange those for the travelers and the trekkers. The bus journey between Leh
and Manali takes about 19 hours or two days with an overnight halt in camps at
Serchu or Pang. Gypsy and jeep jeep taxis are also available, both at Manali and
Leh.
By Air Travel
Indian Airlines operates regular scheduled flight to Leh from Delhi, Chandigarh,
