Kangchenjunga
Trekking Region Nepal Himalaya
Kangchenjunga sometimes spelled
Kanchanjanga or Kinchinjunga is the third largest mountain in the world.
Kangchenjunga is located on the Sikkim (India)-Nepal border as part of the
Himalayan mountain range. Kangchenjunga has 5 peaks, of which the true Summit is
28,169 feet or 8586 meters. The name
Kangchenjunga means "The Five Treasures of the Snow" in the local dialect,
referring to its five summits all over 8000 meters. Kangchenjunga has an
enormous mass with numerous satellite peaks along its ridges. Kangchenjunga is
located at Latitude 27° 42' 9'' Longitude 88° 9' 1 '. Kangchenjunga is also
known by some as named Kangchen Dzö-nga, Kachendzonga, Kangchanfanga.
Traversing the remote and rarely-visited north
eastern corner of Nepal, our route to Kangchenjunga leads through picturesque
farmland and rugged alpine valleys to Ramze (4360m./14300ft), the basecamp for
the south side of the massif. We then cross to the north side of the mountain by
way of the Mirgin La (4663m./15295ft), with magical views of Makalu, Chamlang,
Everest and Kangchenjunga en route. Beyond the attractive Tibetan settlement of
Ghunsa, with its sturdy wooden houses, numerous prayer flags and smiling
villagers, we skirt the incredible northern flanks of Jannu on the approach to
the north side basecamp at Pang Pema (5100m./16728ft). Here at last, the
formidable north face of Kangchenjunga is revealed, towering above the glacier
opposite our camp in icy blue splendour. Popular with KE clients for many years,
this long, varied and sustained trek is recognized to be one of the most
beautiful walks in the world.
