Trekking Chamba
Valley in Himachal Pradesh
|Trekking in Chamba - Bara Bangahal Kaliheni (Sagor)
Manali-Pass|
A twin pass; the lower Kaliheni (4670m) is
normally avoided in favor of the higher and more straightforward Sagor (4833m).
This moderately strenuous trek of 6-7 days negotiates glaciers, rocks and cliffs
and involves fording several streams. The pass is frequently crossed by local
Gaddi shepherds' with their flock of sheep. Kaliheni means black ice-the result
of sheep droppings on the icy surface. Essential to engaged an experienced
guide at Bara Banghal. Best period: Post-monsoon, 20 August to 5 October.
DAY-1- Bara Banghal-Sukha Parao
(2990m) 10Km - After crossing the Ravi river, take a path SE along the N bank of
the Kaliheni Nala. This climbs gradually, rising and falling several times, and
after passing through pine woods and meadows reaches Sukha Parao camp ground
where dead wood and water are available.
DAY-2- Sukha Parao-Lamba Parao (3150m)
10 Km - An easy stage of 4-5h with a few ascents/descents over boulder-strewn
slopes, and fording several icy streams coming down from the N. Lamba Parao is a
beautiful camp ground dotted with a few shepherds' stone huts.
DAY-3- Lamba Parao-Gwari (3750m) 14km
- The tree-line soon ends; the trail mounts gradually along the Kaliheni Nala,
fords a few streams and reaches Guwala Got. Then it goes up steeply over bare
slopes, past Garthla Got, to Gwari camp ground, near the snout of the Kaliheni
Galcier (see Kullu and Parbati Valley map).
DAY-4- Gwari-Kaliheni (Sagor) Pass-Sagor Dug (3580m) 15Km
- A stiff climb of 7Km leads to the more northerly (Sagor) Pass, over moraine
and the glacier, with a steeper section near the top; fine view. On the other
side descend usually soft snow on the underlying crevassed glacier. Continue
down to boulder-strewn slopes and a camp ground (Alias). The path then bears
left and crosses a stream to reach sagor Dug Thach.
DAY-5- Sagor Dug-Kharasu (2900m) 17Km - At first the path
heads right, descends steeply, then follows the bed of stream. After
negotiating a few ribs it arrives in 7Km at Riyali. Now downwards past Kud
Thach which meanders through meadows and pine forest, an ascent to a ridge, then
a steep descent to Kharasu camp ground.
DAY-6- Kharasu-Patli Kuhl (1400m) 16Km - A descent of 7Km
through woods and green slopes leads to Sangchur; one Km beyond the trail turns
right, crosses a stream and reaches Panglodu. Continuing the descent the trail
passes through the small villages of Jogu, Depthi and Sumil to Baragram. From
there to Patli Kuhl roadhead is another 4km. Situated between Kullu and Manali,
this big village with many eating shops is a stop for buses N to Manali and S to
Kullu.
