About this Park
The Jaldapara Wild Life Sanctuary
is situated at the foothills of Eastern Himalayas and on the bank of river Torsa
in West Bengal. Jaldapara, the vast grassland with patches of riverine forests,
was declared a sanctuary in 1943 for protection of the great variety flora and
fauna. The Jaldapara sanctuary is a mixture of a mosaic of woods, grassland,
swamps and streams. The main attraction in Jaldapara apart form its exquisite
natural beauty, is the Asiatic one horned rhino. The Jaldapara sanctuary holds
the maximum number of rhino population in India after Kajiranga National Park in
Assam. It is one of the very few places in India, where the Bengal Florican can
be sighted. Set out with a binocular and see the majestic flight of lesser Pied
hornbill, racket-tailed drongo, paradise flycatcher, Crested Eagle, Pallas's
Fishing Eagle, shikra, Jungle fowl, peafowl, partridges and many other bird
species. An adventurous elephant ride in the morning will take you deep inside
the grassland for the real excitement.
Flora of This Park
The sanctuary consists mainly of
riverine forests, with grasslands, maintained by burning and flooding. Cassia
grass is the widely spread of new riverine accretions. Found mainly on sandy
soils, it can be encountered in clay pockets. The Sal trees are also found on
the east banks of river Malangi. The sanctuary is covered with innumerable
species of shrubs and trees.
Fauna of this Park
The sanctuary is home to the Great
Indian rhinoceros. A small population of the Royal Bengal Tiger is also here.
Sloth bear, Swamp deer, Bison, Wild Boar, Indian Muntjac, Chital Hog Deer,
Leopard, Asiatic Elephant are the major species of mammals present here. The
park holds maximum number of rhino population in India after Kajiranga National
Park in Assam.

It is 3 hours from Siliguri. The
nearest airport is Bagdogra, 140 kms from the sanctuary.
