Fairs & Festivals Ladakh -
The religious philosophy of Buddhism, however,
profound and subtle doesn't preclude an immense joie-de-vivre among its Ladakhi
adhe-rents, and even solemn religious enactments are made the occasion for
joyous celebration. In Ladakh every
occasion marriage, birth, harvesting, commemoration of head Lamas founding of
the monastery, Losar (new year) and flowering is marked by feasting, dancing and
the singing of folksongs that forms a part of its living heritage. Most of the
festivals are held in winter but some popular festival take place in summer too.
The monastic festivals are the heart of all the festivals.
Many of the annual festivals of the gompas take place in winter, a relatively
idle time for the majority of the people. They take the form of dance-dramas in
the gompa courtyards.
Hemis Festival -
Hemis is a two day dance festival held to
commemorate the birth of Guru Padmasambhava, who is believed to have fought with
demons for the safety of the local people in Ladakh. This festival turns into a
fair as the villagers puts up various stalls to sell handicrafts and other
wares.
Losar Festival - Losar is
celebrated in the eleventh month of the Buddhist year. It falls in end November
beginning December every year according to the Lunar calendar. Its origin dates
back to the 15th century. It was held before a battle as it was feared that not
many would survive.
Ladakh Festival - Ladakh Festival
is organized by the Jammu and Kashmir Tourist Office in the month of September.
It brings forward the region's folk dances, art and craft, sporting events and
rituals in Ladakh. The Ladakh Festival is a great tourist event and there is
greater participation of local communities. The main objective of the Ladakh
Festival is to revive and promote the richness, depth and pageantry of Ladakh's
centuries-old culture, traditions and folk heritage for world-wide appreciation
and enjoyment.
Sindhu Darshan Festival -
Sindhu Darshan is three-day festival held from 1st to 3rd June, in Shey Manla
around 8 kms. from Leh on the bank of Indus river. For the first time it was
organized in October 1997, as a symbol of unity and Communal harmony and
national integration. Whilst promoting domestic tourism in Ladakh. It is also a
symbolic salute to brave soldiers of India who have been fighting not only with
enemies in the in the human form but also in the form of nature.
