Chobia Pass to Lahaul Valley|
A short strenuous trek of 4-5
days over this high pass located between Bara Kanda (5857m) and the Tent Peak
(6113m). Start either from Brahmaur or from Hadsar, 13Km E. Best
Period: 15 August to 10 October.
DAY-1
Brahmaur-Hadsar-Chobia (2408m)
26Km - Chamba-Brahmaur, regular bus
service. Himachal Road Transport Corp. (HRTC) operates a jeep and bus
service between Brahmaur and Hadsar. Hadsar (2200m) is a growing village
village with a few eating shops and a PWD house for stay. From here follow
the Budhil river upstream for one Km, then cross by a long bridge and climb
steepy N to Valmin. Passing through forest and meadows, the trail descends
to Chobia Nala then climbs to Chobia village, 13 Km from Hadsar.
Alternatively, leave the Brahmaur-Hadsar roadroad about 6 Km beyond Brahmaur,
where a trail goes down to the Budhil river, crosses it (bridge) and climbs
steeply for about 450m to Chobia village.
DAY-2
Chobia-Alias (3660m) 14 Km
Follow the W side of Chobia Nala and pass through dense forests infested with
animals. After traverisng a rocky slope, the trail reaches Kao village
(2958m), continuing through meadows dotted with multicolored flowers, especially
during August and September. Asteady ascent for 3h leads to Kathuria Devi
temple (goddess of woodcutters), a wooden roofed structure open on three sides;
possible to spend a night under the roof. Further up the forest thins out
as height is gained. Go up through more pasture and juniper trees to
Alias; rock shelter and a few Gaddi shepherds in camp nearby.
DAY-3
Alias-Chobia Pass-Alias (3780m)
14Km The hard climb of about 6Km to the pass takes 5-7h. Passing over a moraine
the trail leads up a crevassed glacier and through a narrow gully with vertical
walls on both sides. On the pass, panoramic view of the Zanskar Range to
the N and the Manimahesh Range to the S. on the other side, pick a way down a
60m high rockface; below that go straight down usually in deep soft snow.
Descending a glacier for 2h is followed by a morain for 1h, then to Alias camp
ground.
DAY-4
Alias-Trilokinath-Udaipur
(2652m) 14 Km Descend the E side of the Chobia Gali Gad for about 6Km over rocky
terrain. Then cross the Gad and descend gently to the small hamlet of
Bharyar (Bhagot), above the Chandra-Bhaga river. From there the trackturns
NW along the river, through forest and fields to reach Trilokinath (2804m).
This big village has an ancientBuddhist temple which houses a one metre high
marble statue of Avalokiteshvara, sitting cross-legged and with six arms.
From there walk through fields for 2Km, go down to cross the river and join the
main highway that leads back to Manali. Udaipur, a small but growing town,
is about 2 Km NW along the highway. Fine wooden temple of goddess Kali is
found at Udaipur. Its wooden walls are intricately carved and depict
various stories from Hindu mythology. Overnight at a roadside forest
resthouse just before entering the town. Udaipur-Manali bus over the
Rohtang Pass takes about 12h.
