Adventure Tour Ladakh-
Leh Ladakh India is one of few
wonderful destinations ideal for trekking and mountaineering. Ladakh with its
rough terrain and wonderful scenic locales offer an adventure lover a mix of
both scenic beauty and challenging heights. Trekking possibilities include
short, day-long walks up and down mountain slopes to visit isolated villages or
monastic settlements, or across a ridge to enjoy the sheer beauty of the lunar
mountain scrape. Or long, trans mountain treks involving weeks of walking and
camping in the wilderness. For example, the trek from Lamayuru in the Indus
valley to Darcha in Lahaul across Zanskar takes nearly three weeks.
Most of the established routes
traverse the Zanskar range which separates the Indus Valley from Zanskar. The Suru and Zanskar valley has a
number of stunning peaks that challenge an intrepid traveler to scale new
heights in Ladakh. Some of the ideal places for mountaineering include Nun-Kun
massif and Zanskar massif. The 10- day Markah valley trek, the 11- day Lamayrur-Padum
traverse and the stock-Khangri round trek are the more popular ones among the
numerous options available in this convoluted mountain mass. In recent years,
parts of the Ladakh range between the Indus and Shayok valleys have also become
available fro trekking The traditional trekking season extends from early June
to mid-October.
Discover Ladakh
Ladakh is a land like no other. Bounded by two of the world's mightiest mountain
ranges, the Great Himalaya and the Karakoram, it lies athwart two other, the
Ladakh range and the Zanskar range.
In geological terms, this is a young land, formed only a few million years ago
by the buckling and folding of the earth's crust as the
Indian sub-continent pushed with irresistible force against the immovable mass
of Asia. Its basic contours, uplifted by these unimaginable tectonic movements,
have been modified over the millennia by the opposite process of erosion,
sculpted into the form we see today by wind and water.

Getting
Ladakh and Away
The best place to embark on a
voyage of discovery of Ladakh is from its capital Leh. Leh is best connected to
places in Ladakh as well as to New Delhi , Srinagar and Jammu.
By Air
Ladakh's capital Leh is
connected by an Indian Airlines and Jet Airways service that comes in to the
airport, 3 miles from the main town on the Srinagar Highway. Indian Airlines and
Jet Airways have daily 2-3 flights Delhi-Leh sector in peak season (June to
September) and at least one flight during autumn, winter and spring. Weather
conditions can be erratic in Leh and flights get cancelled at short notice.
Check before traveling and book well in advance, since flights are usually full.
By Road
The most used overland approach
to Ladakh used to be from the Kashmir valley on the Srinagar-Leh road
(435km/272 miles). The highway opened in early June just as the summer
traffic to the region begins and closed down by November. The highway crosses
some really fabulous scenic areas before entering Ladakh through the Zoji-La
pass (3505m/14,496ft). But because of dispute in Kashmir, there is less tourist
traffic on this road and sometime totally closed by army as the road passes
closer by Pakistan border, making it strategically sensitive.
Now, the most popular road access is along the Manali-Leh
highway that takes approximately 2 days to Leh and its best done in the summer
months. Most road connections to Leh open only in the summer months from
mid-June till end of September. Both traverse treacherous mountain routes and
high passes, many times getting blocked due to landslides. Manali has direct
road connections with Delhi , Chandigarh , Shimla and Dharamsala. Kullu, a
neighborhood town of Manali has air operation with Delhi as well.
